Hello,

Well, it's that time of year when we think of friends and family and
we get together in a spirit of friendship and comradery. Hasn't the
time flown this year? Remember when we first entered the new
millennium. It was just yesterday wasn't it? Now it's 2004!! It
just goes to show how time flies by and we must not let those special
moments and friends go unnoticed.

We regard you as one of our special friends and I thank you for
purchasing from us in the last year. Because you have supported us,
we are able to grow and support you in the future.

At Joshua Books, we receive letters and emails from all parts of the
globe complimenting us on our service and commitment to you, our
customer. We are proud of that and you may not know that all our
orders are dispatched from our warehouse within 48 hours of receipt
(subject to credit approval). Sometimes the same day! Our team is
constantly looking for ways to excel in all that they do so you can
have confidence that you are dealing with a reputable company when
you buy from us.

Admittedly, we have had a couple of hiccups with delivery and
currency exchange over the last month or so and I do apologise for
any inconvenience that may have caused. We learn form our
experiences and we will endeavour not to have them happen in the
future. And we shall endeavour to alleviate these challenges in the
future.

As you know, Tony Bushby's second book of his trilogy *The Secret in
the Bible* has been released and, as with his first book *The Bible
Fraud*, is now available for immediate dispatch. Testimonials and
accolades for these books continue to roll in and Tony is really
making a difference with his writing. If you haven't read either of
these books, I highly recommend that you do so irrespective of your
religious beliefs and we would like to receive your comments after
reading them. More information is available on www.thebiblefraud.com

As usual, this issue of Joshua's Journal is just packed with all
things interesting so let's get on with this holiday issue....

1) EXPRESSION IN THE INFORMATION AGE
by Andrew Lam

Thanks to the Internet, I have over the years managed to get back in
touch with many long-lost friends. But one of them recently sent me
an e-mail complaining that, now that we are communicating on a
regular basis, she actually misses me more, not less.

Astounded by the seemingly paradoxical statement I immediately hit
reply: "L. what on earth do you mean?"

Within half-an-hour or so, her e-mail came back with a strangely
familiar passage in quotation marks.

4) VONDELL'S STORY

As you know, we had three winners in our competition "How my life
changed after reading *The Bible Fraud*". All entries were very good
and it was difficult for the judges to select the winners. However,
they did and Vondell Smoak was one of them. Here is his story…

"Myths, lore, legend, tradition, dogma, an authoritative principle
considered absolutely true. What we call The Holy Bible today can be
viewed as none of these things or all of them. There are those who
select certain phrases and insist that the rest of us must abide by
them or be cast out of free society. But then such hard liners can
be found in all organized institutions, especially religions.

As a child I lacked the wisdom to see the many ways of using the
Bible and, because of the use given by the church of my parents, as
soon as I was old enough to leave home, I left organized religions.
I began the search for my God in the streets and by ways. I was
angry, resentful and intolerant of the anger, resentment and
intolerance I continued to witness from churches.

However, even at the edges of other forms of spiritual pursuits
anger, resentment and intolerance can be found. These didn't bother
me so much as by then I recognized my own. Yet the focus of my
prejudices remained with all groups that used the Bible as their
guide.

Ultimately, in my seventh and eighth decades, I no longer cared so
much what others had to say, but had begun to find all my answers
from within. Yet the weight of all of those words in the Old and New
Testaments that said how things were supposed to be understood hung -
just hung there - in the way of any direction my heart would take me.
Like the invisible elephant in the living room.

On a message board, I heard about Tony Bushby's book and I ordered it.

I have read it cover-to-cover probably eight times and certain
sections many, many more times. I've made charts, genealogies,
looked up each reference in several different Bible translations. I
have searched the Internet for specific topics and nouns. And every
point and idea Tony Bushby puts forth rings true and cannot be shown
wrong.

Now I love the Bible and all that it has contributed to my life in
whatever form. It has frightened me, dominated me, told me I am
sinful and very bad. I have yelled at it, damned it, avoided it,
pretended it wasn't important, exhausted myself dragging it around on
my back forgetting it is there. A very worthy adversary, teacher,
partner.

I no longer doubt that these are God's words, just for me. A
brilliant fiction, a grand myth. Something to be taken very seriously
and is sacred as am I.

And I am freed from its oppression. And hadn't even noticed it had
been there.

Now I am reaching to know the true Jesus and Judas and the messages
that they each found so important to offer the general public - the
whole of humanity.

Tony, what is the Secret in the Bible?"

6) DO YOU BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUSE?

It has been a long while since I have completely read "Twas the
Night before Christmas" so I thought I would include it here to
finish of this December newsletter.

Until recently, it was believed that this ballad was written in 1822
for Clement Clarke Moore's two daughters, Margaret and Charity, and
later anonymously published in the Troy [New York] Sentinel on
December 23, 1823. But, according to University of Toronto English
Library in 2000, Don Foster, in his book *Author Unknown: On the
Trail of Anonymous* was able to demonstrate that Moore could not have
been the author. Foster concluded that it was probably written by
Major Henry Livingston Jr.

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
or
An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas
by
Major Henry Livingston Jr. (1748-1828)
(previously believed to be by Clement Clarke Moore)

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"
