2) WIKILEAKS AND YOUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH Julian Assange, the owner of Wikileaks who has never been charged for any offences, has this week been in court in London with his legal team, defending himself from extradition to Sweden and potential deportation to the United States. Julian is an Australian citizen who comes from Melbourne and his mother Christine Assange lives on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. In support of her son, she has been very vocal of late and has launched a scathing attack on our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, calling her “pigheaded, uninformed and a bounty hunter”. Ms Gillard has told the media, “There's not anything we (the Australian government) can do or indeed should do about [Julian Assange].” Mrs Assange said in reply, “It appears to me that Ms Gillard has slavishly hopped on board the Palin posse brand of politics, with my son in her sights, acting as a bounty hunter for the US administration.” On the evening of Friday 4th February, a public meeting was held in Melbourne in support of Julian Assange. Julian and his UK lawyer spoke (via Skype) and other speakers included his Australian lawyer, his local member of parliament and also the secretary of his journalist's union. It was a remarkable meeting and the video make riveting viewing. This is quite a long video (90 mins) but is well worth putting the time aside to view it. This is the type of information you normally wouldn't get during a 10 second sound bite from a talking head on 6 o'clock news and it may well help you understand what is actually going on with Julian Assange and Wikileaks. On the evening of February 14, the Australian ABC program "4 Corners" ran an excellent story called "The Forgotten Man". This program is well worth watching to give you a bigger picture. I am not complaining as the downpours are not destructive now and nature does what nature does. Old timers that I talk to tell me that it’s not at all new and to blame climate change is “bloody silly”. I had another friend tell me just the other day that it is all leading up to the end of the world. Well I sure hope not as I want to see my grandkids grow up and they are very young now, plus we want a few more to enrich our lives. Since I do have faith in humanity to eventually act responsibly and I do work to live in the present moment, I simply took the opportunity this afternoon to look at the olive trees in our yard and to appreciate how they seemed to be appreciating the rain. Then I looked a little further to the line of palm trees and they too seemed to appreciate the downpour, as did the grass and the little herb and vegetable garden. All seemed to be communicating in some way. In that moment, I saw nature in harmony and I felt blessed in some way. I stayed in the moment for some time and then a little green frog started to croak in harmony and I knew the world was not going to end soon. I know that if we can all experience the harmony exhibited by nature that all will be well in our world and any other big place. Then the need to deliver some printed goods to a client and the perceived need to check the share market close took my thoughts to a past that I cannot change and to a future that does not exist yet.
